Arsenal....Third Place! Ours For The Taking?

A great game of two completely different half’s saw the mighty gunners demolish Wigan and knock them out of the premiership and down to the championship next season. Two goals from Lukas Podolski and one each from Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott saw us win 4-1 on the night and moves us back into the 4th and final Champions League spot going into the last game of the season. Going into the game, nerves were jangling and tensions were high but we managed to hold our nerve and get the all important three points.

That win means we just need three points from our last game away to Newcastle to guarantee that we make the champions league next season. We all know it won’t be easy but this team are on an excellent run of form and with last night’s win ensuring Newcastle are safe from relegation the pressure is off for them. Lets hope they’re already in holiday mode.
Interestingly that win also leaves us 2 points behind Chelsea, who host Everton on Sunday, and one goal behind them on goal difference. Now Everton are good side and have picked up 21 points in 18 games away from home this season and if they can beat Chelsea who are safely in the champions league unless spurs manage to score about 17 goals against Sunderland then its down to us whether we can make third place and avoid having to qualify for the Champions League yet again this year.
We all know what’s at stake. We have an estimated £80m to spend this summer and who were looking at and how much of that we will actually be able to spend all hinges on Champions League football. After years of balancing the books and not being competitive in the transfer market due to the move to the Emirates stadium we are finally in a position to show some ambition and compete financially and qualifying for Europe’s biggest and best competition is instrumental in ensuring we can attract top players capable of winning the trophies we’ve been waiting so long for. With the summer transfer window beckoning and rumours of potential transfer targets coming thick and fast, all the players are playing for their Arsenal futures.
The time has come to focus on the winning this last game. We just need to focus on the three points, the other results will sort themselves out. Us fans need to forget about summer transfer targets, who might be coming in and who might be leaving. This year, Champions league qualification is in our own hands. Its time to show them wannabe’s from Tottenham who the best team in north London really is. Bale united have been making noise all season about knocking us out of the Champions League spot. Its time for our players to stand up and show the fans what they’re made of. COYG!!!!
